Balou is our 4th leonberger,  very different in type from our other dogs,  with a very dark coat, but has the same gentle  temperament.  He is of quiet character and very laid back in his attitude. He will do anything to please us as he is not happy to be in our bad books.  He adores to be around children and has lots of patience with them and also loves to be around other dogs playing happily. 
He loves his weekly training lessons and completed his Bronze at only 6 months of age.  During 2010, he passed his KCGC Silver award, passed level 1 & 2 of his carting Assessment and became a registered Pet's As Therapy dog.
He does not have the same enthusiasm towards the show ring, but did very well to  qualifiy for Crufts 2010. After giving him a six month break from the showring he went and qualified for Crufts 2011 at his first outing. Balou will be going to Crufts and then will take another long break from the showring as we concerntrate on his PAT visits of which he has taken to very well.
 Our  goal for 2011 is to train him to KCGC Gold level, and to continue with the carting lessons of which he thoroughly enjoys. He is such an easy dog to train and a joy to work with.
 
For a young male, he is of very good size  and proportion, rangier in type with the correct length to height  ratio and  is very harmonious in movement. He has a fabulous black mask  with a very dark oval shaped  eye and a superb length of dark coat.

Critique - 2 year old male Tall already with nice proportions and still has a lot of maturing to do. Masculine head with the blackest mask of the day.Presented a beautiful outline when stood which he kept on the move. Lovely tail-set, and good bone. Handled the floor well. My one concern would be when looking at him he looks very black as he has heavy black tipping, however on parting the coat, the undercoat is all a deep mahogany red. He is out of coat at the moment and I am sure on re-growth this will balance the black. A really nice lad already. Look forward to seeing him in a couple of years.
