Ozzy was our 2nd Leonberger to join us in 2007 and it was origionally our intention to show him and to breed with Elsa. Neither were possible and due to one of his litter siblings having AF, he can not be used at stud. We took the decision to have him castrated, so now Ozzy is just our pet. He has an amazing cheeky character and is a superb gentle giant who is loved by everyone who meets him. He has been trained up to Bronze level in the Kennel Club Good Citizen awards but we decided not to take this any further.
He passed his Temperament Assesment to be a Pets As Therapy dog with flying colours and his assessor described him as a massive big softie. He was loved by all the residents as well as the staff and did a wonderful job in the community.
In 2009 at his first and only Championship show, he had a VHC place witheld and later in a written critique, Oz was described by a credible UK judge as having crippled hocks. At the time, we thought nothing of it, but we were disappointed that his show career was over. To us, he is a magnificent dog.
During the year 2010, Ozzy became less able to tolerate exercise and became quite weak on his back legs. This has become gradually worse over the last few months and after displaying the symptoms of Leonberger Polyneuropathy, including the high gait, we had him tested for this type of early onset LPN1. Surprisingly, the result came back D/N. More tests will be done as soon as they are available. Ozzy can no longer go for the long walks that he once enjoyed but he still has the same cheeky character that makes him so lovable. As long as he is pain free and happy, he will continue to enjoy his life with his family and we can only pray that he will be with us for quite some time yet. We are so very proud of this wonderful young dog who has such a huge personality and we love him dearly. Ozzy will always be his Dad's special lad

Pedigree Ozzy relaxing on his own sofa in the garden
Below is a video of Ozzy, the first part taken on 5th January2011, the second part 4th February 2011. It clearly shows that he has the hitched step and the deterioration is evident in just four weeks. He has always had good exercise and this has maybe helped to keep his muscles strong for so long. He has gained weight in the last 6 weeks due to him being intolerant to exercise although he still has a short walk every day. We can only hope that the water treadmill and hydrotherapy exercise will help to keep him on his legs a while longer.
We are heartbroken to see him like this but he is a very happy lad despite his obvious broblems.
We would encourage all breeders of this beautiful breed of dog to have the LPN1 tests now available before considering a mating. No one wishes to send a puppy out in to the world who will suffer in this way. We owe it to the future health our beloved Leonbergers.
For those in denial of this dreadful disease, watch our big beautiful boy and weep.
